Updated: Train service in Joliet suspended after 1 pedestrian struck, killed by freight train

One person is dead after they were struck by a freight train in Joliet.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis. He did not have further information because it is an ongoing investigation.

Metra police were on the scene at the Joliet Gateway Center, 90 E. Jefferson St., Joliet, and two entrances to the Rock Island platform were blocked off by barricade tape.

The Rock Island main line train service has been temporarily suspended, according to Metra’s website.

Minimal Rock Island service will originate and terminate in New Lenox. Metra’s website said that customers should expect extensive delays.

Joliet police Sgt. Dwayne English said he was unable to provide information about the incident because it is under investigation by Metra police and the Joliet Police Department is merely providing assistance.
