A Maywood man was killed after his Toyota Camry struck a semitrailer that was stopped on Interstate 55 in Will County.

At 2:21 a.m, Wednesday, Illinois State Police troopers responded to the crash on I-55 near milepost 252, which is south of Route 52, in an area near Shorewood and Joliet.

Maurice Burkley, 52, of Maywood, was identified by the Will County Coroner’s Office as the driver of the Toyota Camry who was killed.

Burkley was pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m. at the scene of the crash.

The crash led to five-hour closure of the southbound lanes of I-55. All lanes were reopened about 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Before the crash, Burkley’s Toyota Camry and a semitrailer were traveling south on I-55, police said. The semitrailer was driven by Yu Fan, 36, of Chino Hills, California.

The semitrailer was stopped on the roadway because of intermittent closures for construction, police said.

The front end of the Burkley’s vehicle struck the rear end of the semitrailer, police said. Burkley was the sole occupant of the vehicle and he suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
