An early Monday morning crash on Route 394 left two Steger men dead, police said.

Robert Costello, 22, and Hunter Conner, 24, were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash on Route 394 north of Goodenow Road, according to a statement released Monday by the Illinois State Police.

Costello was driving a maroon Ford Explorer north on Route 394 south of Crete just west of the Illinois-Indiana border when he veered to the right, ran off the road, hit the ditch and crashed into a light pole shortly before 4 a.m., police said.

The Explorer then flipped over and landed in the ditch, according to police.

Conner was a passenger in the Explorer, police said.

The northbound lanes of Route 394 were shut down about 4:30 a.m. while the crash was investigated and remained closed for hours later, according to a state police statement.
