Oregon mom accused of suffocating her 7-year-old son, facing 5 counts of murder

Sarah Lyn (Burton) Safranek

OREGON – The mother of a 7-year-old Oregon boy suffocated him, investigators say.

Sarah Lyn (Burton) Safranek, 34, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery of a child, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said in a news release.

She was arrested today and is in Ogle County jail on $2 million bond.

Safranek faces 20 years to life if convicted of murder, and 6 to 30 years for aggravated battery.

Nathaniel Burton, son of Safranek and Bryan E. Burton, was pronounced dead at KSB Hospital in Dixon after Oregon police responded to a 911 call at 2:35 a.m. Feb. 17 in the 400 block of South 10th Street reporting a 7-year-old who was not breathing.

An autopsy showed the boy died of suffocation, the release said.
