LOCAL ROUNDUP: Peterson, Healy get first-round wins at state tennis meet

Three local singles players and a doubles pairing competed in the Class 1A state tennis championships Thursday in the Chicago suburbs.

Sterling’s Brecken Peterson won his opening match, beating Highland’s Sutherland Allen 6-1, 6-1. He then lost to Peter Adams Agresti from Beacon Academy 6-0, 6-0. In the consolation second round he beat Carter Kendall of Morton 2-6, 6-3 (7). He then fell 6-0, 6-0 to Caleb Brinkman from Peoria Richwoods in the consolation third round.

Dixon’s Lucas Healy also won his first match, beating Jersey’s Logan Schultz 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Finley Buelte from Rockford Christian 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. He lost in the consolation bracket 6-2, 6-2 to Bill Layton of Urbana.

Newman’s Marvel Zhang lost to Nazareth Academy’s Ryan Nelson 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and fell to Effingham St. Anthony’s Noah Tegeler 6-0, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, Dixon’s Leith Elbzour and Logan Moeller lost their first-round match 6-2, 6-3 to Woodstock’s Riley Ellegood and Brad Arnold. They then fell to Metamora’s Keagan Nevitt and Griffin Hammond 6-0, 6-0 in the consolation bracket.

Wrestling

Sterling 39, Riverdale 28: The Golden Warriors won four contested bouts – three by pin – in a dual victory over the Rams.

Drew Kested (160 pounds), Chase Ullrich (195) and Jason Farnham (285) all won with first-period pins for Sterling, and Mauricio Garcia added an 11-4 decision at 152. The Warriors also received three forfeits.

Panthers sweep at home: Erie-Prophetstown defeated Putnam County-Hall 57-5 and Rockridge 39-23 in a triangular.

Gunnar Wuebben (170 pounds) won by pin and Elijah Freidrichsen (285) won a 3-2 decision against Putnam County-Hall. Jase Grunder (138) and Logan Wheeler (182) won by pin against Rockridge, with Nick Ballard (220) adding a 5-2 decision.
