Area roundup: Rock Falls boys, Fulton girls win indoor meet at Westwood

The Rock Falls boys and Fulton girls won team titles at a six-team indoor meet at Westwood Sports Complex in Sterling on Monday night.

Booker Cross led the Rockets to victory with four first-place finishes, and teammate Matthew Marcum added three more wins as Rock Falls scored 124 points to defeat runner-up Erie-Prophetstown (88). Kewanee was third (84), Newman finished fourth, (54), Sherrard took fifth (51), and Fulton was sixth (23).

Cross won the 60-meter dash (7.41 seconds) and triple jump (11.78 meters), and also ran legs on the winning 4x200 relay (1:39.09) and 4x400 relay (3:37.59). Marcum was on both of those relays, and he also won the 60 hurdles (9.12). Baraka Boards and Matthew McGrady joined them in the 4x200, and Devin Tanton and Kohle Bradley ran in the 4x400.

The Rockets also got a win from Brady Root in the 800 (2:20.42), and Boards was second in the long jump (6.06 meters). Josh Woodard (shot put, 11.86) and Jose Gomez (1600, 5:07.46) also notched runner-up finishes, as did the 4x800 relay team of Josue DeLaTorre, Darien Huggins, Juan Hernandez and Gomez (9:58.54).

Braxton Froeliger led Erie-Prophetstown with wins in the 200 (24.57) and long jump (6.09 meters), while Ben Lantz finished first in the 400 (56.57). Trevor Cobo won the high jump (1.80 meters), and Parker Holdorf took the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches).

Lucas Schaab was a double-winner for Newman, taking the 1600 (5:05.81) and joining Thomas Powers, Kaden Welty and Jacob Donald to win the 4x800 (9:01.26). Powers, Welty and Donald teamed with Owen McBride to take second in the 4x400 (3:52.61), while Espen Hammes was second in the 800 (2:26.61).

Fulton got a win from Joey Huizenga in the shot put (13.46 meters), and Daken Pessman added a third in the 200 (26.34).

On the girls side, the Steamers scored 98 points to top Erie-Prophetstown (84), Rock Falls (80), Sherrard (77), Kewanee (46) and Newman (34).

Miraya Pessman won the 60-meter dash (8.57 seconds) and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team (4:36.21), and she also took second in the long jump (4.35 meters). Abbigail Thyne won the 200 (29.14) and ran on the victorious 4x200 relay team (1:53.58), while Annaka Hackett, Mikayla Gazo and Lauren Mahoney all ran in both the 4x200 and 4x400. Lara Bielema added a win in the 60 hurdles (10.03), and Emery Wherry was second in that race (10.50).

Erie-Prophetstown got wins from Dylan Chandler in the 400 (1:12.71), Riley Packer in the 800 (2:34.16), Hayley Wuebben in the pole vault (9-0), and the 4x800 relay team of Chandler, Packer, Jade Nickerson and Madyson Bushaw (11:12.01). Runners-up for the Panthers were Jillian Norman in the 800 (2:54.20), Kennedy Buck in the shot put (10.49 meters), and Olivia Purvis in the pole vault (8-0).

Rock Falls’ wins came from Tayli Hultin in the 1600 (6:00.18) and Carli Kobbeman in the long jump (4.36 meters). Second-place finishers were Emily Spooner in the 60 (8.58), Hana Ford in the 1600 (6:07.81), and Cadence Williamson in the high jump (1.50 meters).

Newman’s top finish came from Syrinidie Amos, who took second in the 200 (29.84); she also took third in the 60 (8.60). Amiya Rodriguez was third in the 200 (30.98), and Claire Crisham took third in the 800 (3:06.74).

Boys basketball

Schilling named all-conference: Sterling junior point guard JP Schilling was a first-team selection on the Western Big 6 all-conference team, the league announced Tuesday.

Schilling was the lone Golden Warrior named to the team. Quincy senior Jeremiah Talton was named the league MVP.

Wrestling

Locals litter BNC all-conference team: Dixon, Oregon and Rock Falls had plenty of all-conference selections on the Big Northern wrestling team, the league announced Tuesday.

Dixon seniors Mitchell White and Justin Dallas, and sophomores Ayden Rowley and Steven Kitzman were first-team picks, as were Oregon juniors Lane Halverson, Seth Stevens, Gabe Eckerd and Evan Flaharty. Rock Falls junior Aaron Meenen was also named to the first team.

Local second-teamers were Dixon seniors Chris Sitter and Brody Potter, and sophomores Cade Hey and Jayce Kastner; Oregon senior Ethan George, sophomore Anthony Bauer and freshman Preston LaBay; and Rock Falls senior Payhton Smith.

Dixon’s Owen Brooks, Oregon’s Jared Glendenning, and Rock Falls’ Jacob Hosler were honorable mention selections.
