Area roundup: Local girls wrestlers, boys swimmers bow out on Day 1 at state

The three area athletes who qualified for the first-ever IHSA Girls State Wrestling Tournament this weekend all had their seasons end on Day 1 of competition.

Erie-Prophetstown freshman Jayda Rosenow went 0-2 at 130 pounds, losing in the first round to Berwyn-Cicero Morton senior Karla Topete by pin in 1:35, then falling to Hoffman Estates freshman Abby Ji by pin in 43 seconds in the consolation first round.

Oregon junior Elizabeth Ruter also was 0-2 at 135 pounds, falling to Niles West junior Al Ghala Mariam Al Radi by pin in 2:52 in the opening round, then losing to Macomb freshman Kelly Ladd by injury default in 4:21 in the consolation first round.

Rock Falls sophomore Ellisa Russell did not wrestle in the 145-pound bracket. She suffered a separated shoulder in practice and was unable to compete.

Boys swimming

Locals finish season at state: The area swimmers competing at the IHSA State Meet this weekend in Westmont all saw their seasons come to an end Friday on Day 1.

Dixon senior Carson Faley swam in a pair of events for the Byron co-op, but did not qualify for finals in either one. He was 25th in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.60, just off his sectional title time of 1:43.06, and he took 24th in the 500 freestyle in 4:42.64, which was well off his sectional-record time of 4:37.06.

Sterling’s 200 medley relay team of Reiley Austin, Braeden Ruiz, Skylar Drolema and Michael Garland finished 25th in 1:39.00, just off their sectional title time of 1:38.01.

The Water Warriors’ 200 freestyle relay team of Mason Adams, Garland, Drolema and Austin took 24th in 1:27.99, improving on their sectional title time of 1:28.18.

Ruiz also swam in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 38th in 1:00.25, a little behind his sectional title time of 59.50 seconds.

Byron co-op’s Levi Schamper finished 33rd in the 100 butterfly in 53.20 seconds, off his sectional time of 52.98. Nathan Bell also competed in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:00.15 to match his seed time.
