How to care for succulents

If you are looking to spruce up your home with some easy-to-grow plants, look no further than succulents. The sturdy, low maintenance plant can thrive both indoors and outdoors. Peggy Anderson from Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery and Garden Center offers these tips on how to keep your succulents thriving all year long:

1. Let the sunshine in

Indoor succulents need at least six hours of sun each day. To that end, Anderson recommends placing your plants near a south or east facing window in order to catch the greatest amount of sunlight.

2. Use the soak and dry method

When you water your plant, soak the soil completely and then let it dry out completely before rewatering. During the growing season, make sure to water a little more frequently.

3. Pick the right container

The right pot can make all the difference when it comes to your plant’s success. Anderson recommends using containers with drainage holes. Terra Cotta or ceramic pots work well, as both of these materials are breathable.

4. Choose the best soil

Make sure to use well-draining potting soil. Wondering which one to choose? Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery and Garden Center sells soil specifically for succulents.

5. Don’t forget to fertilize

Like any other plant, succulents can benefit from a fertilizer application. It is recommended to fertilize succulents in the spring, as this is the beginning of their growing season and the plants can benefit from the added nutrients.
