Looking for a way to maximize your yard’s attributes? Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery & Garden Center, in Crystal Lake, offers these tips to keep your curb appeal appealing this summer:
1. Watering is key
A deep watering less often is the way to establish good root growth. To do so, apply sufficient water so that the soil around the roots is thoroughly moist, then allow to dry enough so some air can penetrate the root ball area. Roots, like leaves, need oxygen and too much continuous water prevents the soil from breathing. More watering tips can be found at https://www.countrysideflowershop.com/2020/06/30/how-to-water/.
2. Encourage plants, lawn root growth
Root growth in the first year is most important for plant health and survival. To that end, anything newly planted could receive another application of BioTone® or Plant Starter® so their roots can continue to develop. Keep lawns healthy with Johnathan Green Organic Lawn Food®, which promotes deeper roots to withstand environmental stress and pests. Lawns will grow so thick that no room is left for weeds to invade. Another perk? Organic lawn food is safe for children and pets to romp on.
3. Cut back hydrangeas
Prune spent blooms on Hydrangea macrophylla varieties such as Summer Crush, Endless Summer, Bloomstruck, Fire Island, Hamptons, Pink Splendor, Star Gazers, and Twist and Shout. This will encourage new growth and blooms.
4. Check for fungus
This is typically the time of year when you may notice — at first — a gray film on leaves that will continue its spread to all of the leaves, turning an unsightly, moldy-white color, killing the foliage and eventually the plant. Called Powdery Mildew, this is usually seen on peonies, Bee Balm, Ninebark, and lilacs, but can easily spread to other plants in the vicinity. If this is something you’ve noticed, apply Infuse Fungicide once the air temperature is below 80 degrees. When it comes to the lawn, keep an eye out for grub damage. If you notice the circles of dead grass popping up, visit Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery & Garden Center for a solution.
