The Lake in the Hills Police Department plans to conduct additional patrols this week, saying they’re aiming to prevent speeding.

Starting Monday and ending July 31, police will be upping patrols with the goal of stopping fatalities and reducing collisions due to speeding, according to a news release.

Speeding has been a factor in about one-third of all motor-vehicle fatalities, the police department said in the release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding killed 9,478 people in 2019.

“Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder, but all of the people on the road around them,” police said in the news release. “Speeding is more than just breaking the law. The consequences are far-ranging.”

These consequences, police said, include a greater chance motorists will lose control of their vehicle; reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment; increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger; greater chance that other road users will misjudge the high speed of travel; reduced ability to navigate safely around curves or objects in the roadway; and and increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries.

“Let’s all do our part in making roadways safer to travel by being aware of our speed and obeying the speed limit signs – all the time,” police said. “This mobilization is made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportion.”
