Streamwood man accused of firing gun in Lake in the Hills

Shots were not ‘directed at anyone or anything,’ Lake in the Hills police spokeswoman says

Police on Saturday arrested a 23-year-old man accused of firing a loaded pistol in Lake in the Hills.

Travious O. Brown-Utley is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification card, possession of ammunition without a FOID card and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Officers were called at 3:43 a.m. to the 900 block of Mesa Drive for a report of shots fired, Lake in the Hills Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Eccles said.

When officers arrived minutes later, they stopped Brown-Utley’s vehicle based on a previous description and discovered he was in possession of a firearm, Eccles said. He also is accused of possessing 13 9-mm shells, according to the complaint.

A previous felony conviction bars Brown-Utley from possessing a firearm, court records show.

“Upon further investigation, it was determined that Brown-Utley was involved in two accidents where property was damaged, specifically trees and shrubs,” Eccles said. “It was also ascertained that no one was in the vehicle when the shot was fired, the vehicle was not moving, nor was the shot directed at anyone or anything.”

It was not immediately clear why Brown-Utley might have fired the weapon.

He remained at the McHenry County Jail Monday on a $75,000 bond. Brown-Utley is scheduled for a bond hearing Wednesday morning.

He did not have an attorney as of Monday evening, court records show.
