Round Lake Beach man sentenced to prison for 2018 burglary in Crystal Lake

Defense attorney calls 4-year prison sentence for burglarizing vehicle ‘excessive’

A 27-year-old Round Lake Beach man whose fingerprints linked him to a 2018 burglary in Crystal Lake was sentenced to prison on Friday.

Austin G. DeLeon, of the 1300 block of Maple Street, was found guilty of a felony burglary charge following a December 2020 trial by judge. McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge subsequently sentenced DeLeon to four years in prison for entering another woman’s vehicle with the intent to commit a theft.

The Crystal Lake Police Department responded on July 23, 2018, to the area of Regal Drive and Oak Hollow Road for a report of a burglary to a vehicle, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Fingerprints left on the handle and a tablet inside the vehicle led officers to DeLeon, who had a previous burglary conviction, according to the release.

Reached by phone Monday, DeLeon’s attorney George Gomez said DeLeon is likely to appeal the sentence.

“I find it to be excessive,” Gomez said.
