Four ways to celebrate National Cat Lovers Month

For many, December is a time for ringing in holidays such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas.

But there’s another important celebration to be had, as December is also designated as National Cat Lover’s Month. Here are four ways to honor the felines in your life:

1. TLC

Use this month as an excuse to shower some extra love and attention on your furry feline. One easy way to do that? Buy your pet a new toy or new scratching post. Additionally, make sure to carve out some extra time to cuddle your four-legged friend.

2. Make health a priority

It is recommended that cats see the veterinarian at least once a year for an examination and annual shots. Has it been pawsitively too long since your pet has gotten a checkup? Give your pet the gift of good health during National Cat Lover’s Month by scheduling a wellness exam.

3. Give back

Since December is also known as National Giving Month, choose to celebrate both by making a monetary donation to a local Humane Society or animal rescue. You can also make a contribution by purchasing much-needed supplies such as cat litter and pet food for a rescue, or even volunteer your time.

4. Educate

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more than three million cats annually end up in animal shelters across the United States. Unfortunately, about 1.4 million of those cats are euthanized often due to overcrowding. But spaying or neutering pets can help control the overpopulation crisis. To that end, consider using National Cat Lover’s Month to educate friends, family and your community about pet overpopulation, adoption and the importance of spaying and neutering.
