5 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Plumbing

Spring is an excellent time to give your home a deep clean and to ensure your plumbing and other home systems are functioning correctly. Since plumbing systems can be adversely affected by the increased rainfall in April, here are 5 spring cleaning tips to make sure your plumbing is operating properly:

1. Check your hose bibs to ensure they are working correctly. “We’re at the point in the year where deep freezes are unlikely to happen,” said Mike Krejci, a professional plumber with Jay’s Plumbing in Downers Grove. “It’s okay to reattach outdoor hoses at this time.”

2. Monitor your sump pump regularly. “You should look inside the pit to ensure there isn’t any rocks or debris accumulating in the groundwater surrounding the pump,” added Krejci. “Test your primary pump by adding water to the pit to ensure the pump turns on and discharges properly. Unplug the primary pump every month or so to make sure the battery backup system is working properly, as a sump pump failure can be catastrophic during the rainy season.”

3. If you have a basement bathroom or wet bar, or any other plumbing fixtures that go unused regularly, check to ensure the drains are working and the fixtures are lubed. Run water in the sinks and showers, and flush the toilets periodically. Run water through the floor drains and the p-traps under the sinks to eliminate odors. According to Krejci, idle plumbing fixtures can malfunction or cause problems if not used occasionally.

4. Check the drains around the outside of your home. All grates on the property, including any in front of your garage, should be cleaned to keep them clear of clogs.

5. Have your plumber perform sewer maintenance. During the spring months, roots begin to grow and can affect the underground plumbing system. The plumbing lines should be rodded to ensure they are functioning correctly.
