One way to protect your home from potential water damage is to be aware of the noises made by its plumbing components. “Houses make strange noises all the time, and most are related to settling or to water moving throughout the home,” explained Mike Krejci, professional plumber with Jay’s Plumbing. “Any plumbing fixture or appliance with a drainage system, like a toilet or shower, can create noise. It’s important to know what to listen for so you can call a plumber if the situation warrants it.”
1. Water rushing or trickling down a wall. These noises are associated with drainage lines and don’t usually indicate a problem. “Older cast iron pipes are very quiet, but the newer PVC pipes don’t muffle the sound of water moving through as well,” said Krejci. “Some noises are normal, but if you hear water trickling around a toilet, especially if it hasn’t been used, there may be a leak. Call a plumber if you’re hearing noises that are new or unusual.”
2. Clicking or popping sounds. “In some cases, the bracing of a pipe can come loose and create clicking sounds,” added Krejci. “If a home has radiant heating or a boiler system, air pockets in the pipes can create strange noises. An inspection would ensure the water pipes are secure and that the boiler doesn’t have a leak allowing air to enter the normally closed system.”
3. Rubbing noises. “When pipes expand and contract, especially if located in a particularly tight spot, it can create a noise when the pipe rubs against a wood joist,” said Krejci. “Water lines are typically soldered to copper brackets, so the expansion and contraction of the pipes can make similar rubbing noises inside the walls.”
According to Krejci, it’s important to note whether the noises are occurring constantly, occasionally, or only when a plumbing fixture or appliance is used, to help identify a leak. For more information, please contact:
