3 Tips For Organizing End-Of-Life Documents

While nobody can predict when the end of their life will come, having a set of organized end-of-life documents will help you and your survivors be prepared for that eventual occurrence, regardless of your age. There are a lot of things to consider and decide upon, and most people like making those decisions for themselves. Here are 3 tips for organizing your end-of-life documents:

1. Find an attorney with a good reputation in your community. “A knowledgeable attorney will assist you with creating a Will and a Trust, and will establish a Power of Attorney for Property and a Power of Attorney for Healthcare,” explained John Adolf, Director of Adolf Funeral Services. “All these items are extremely important to consider having in place, especially at the end of your life.”

2. Take the time to organize all of your legal documents for your surviving family members. “You should have separate files for your life insurance policies, bank account information, investment accounts (pension, 401K, mutual funds, and stocks and bonds), auto titles, home deeds, and credit card accounts,” added Adolf. “Make sure your beneficiary designations are up to date on all these accounts, and have usernames and passwords available if the documentation is online. If you’re a veteran, have a file for your DD214 form. Having these in order, and making them easy to locate, will eliminate many common problems that can occur when someone dies.”

3. Discuss the details of how you’d like to be honored and remembered with your family and a trusted funeral director. “Organizing statistical and personal information will be extremely important and helpful for your survivors,” said Adolf. “The more details you can provide will help alleviate stress on your family, and will provide a personal guideline for them to follow when planning your funeral and memorial service.”
