Name: Brooklynn Moore
School: Glenbard South, senior
Sport: Basketball
Why she was selected: Moore scored 16 points, including her 1,000th career point, in a win over South Elgin.
She was voted the Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Here is her Q&A with Sports Editor Joshua Welge.
Your 1,000th point: How did you score it, did you know you were close, how did you celebrate it and what does it mean?
Moore: I did not know I was close. My parents and coach had discussed it and decided that it would be better to just focus on the playing. Two points before reaching 1,000 at the start of the third period, my coach let me know that I had two points until 1,000. My guard Kaitlin [Erickson] passed the ball to me in the post, I had my opponent sealed off and once I caught the ball I did a quick drop step and made the layup. The coaches stopped the game and the announcer announced that I scored the 1,000th point. Once the game paused, I celebrated with my coaches and teammates. I then looked into the stands and saw my friends and family cheering. The whole moment was really surreal. It made me look back on the past years of hard work and made me appreciate the tougher moments I faced. I was very happy to know that my efforts and hard work led to something so great.
How is the start to the season going?
Moore: The start of the season is going well. Currently our team is undefeated in our new conference and only have one loss overall. Specifically for myself, the start of the season is going well. There are still some things within my game I wish to improve on but other than that I’m excited for the season to progress, especially with my team this year.
You obviously play volleyball at a high level, too. What’s the transition in the seasons like?
Moore: The transition became easier each year. During volleyball season I would be shooting at open gyms but never really playing against competition. So having to jump right into the physical environment is a little off putting, but not difficult.
What are some goals for the season?
Moore: Since this is my last year, I am really striving to leave a positive legacy within a school that has supported me as an athlete. I also want to help take my team as far as we can go. I want to end this season with no regrets.
What’s your favorite or toughest class in school?
Moore: My favorite class in school is AP Psychology. I have always found the subject interesting. The human mind and behavior we exhibit is so complex that it is almost impossible to find myself uninterested.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?
Moore: My favorite movie is “The Princess and The Frog.” I just loved the old Disney animation and the classic story of the princess and prince falling in love. I also love the Louisiana cultural aspects as well.
Do you have a favorite sports team or athlete?
Moore: My favorite athlete is Juju Watkins. She is such a talented guard and passionate player.
What’s your plans beyond high school, athletically and academically?
Moore: I plan to attend an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and study dentistry. Athletically, I don’t intend to continue to play any sport and really want to focus on my academics and future career plans.
