Batavia Park District Dish: Five ways to cure cabin fever

As Punxsutawney Phil predicted, winter seems to be sticking around and making quite a statement with the several measurable snowfalls and frigid temperatures. At some point, cabin fever starts to settle in as we stay home more than normal during these times. There are still plenty of activities to do this winter – the following are five ways to cure your cabin fever!

Lace Up Your Skates Make ice skating at the Depot Pond a family tradition! Whether you’re skating for the first time or have been skating your whole life, this is a great way to get some exercise in the winter. Skaters are asked to bring their own skates and follow the rules posted at the Depot Pond. When the green flag is flying that means it is safe to skate and the contrary is true when the red flag is posted. You can check the status of the ice rink by visiting bataviaparks.org/ice-skating. Restrooms are available at the Peg Bond Center which will be open as a warming house to get out of the chilly weather.

Explore the Outdoors With dozens of park sites in Batavia, visit one of your favorite parks in the snowy weather to see it from a new perspective! Take a nature walk, test out your snowshoes, show off your photography skills, or build a snowman – all great options to get a little fresh air in the middle of winter!

Stay Connected Virtually These frigid temperatures make it easy to want to stay inside the comfort of your warm home. Take advantage of time at home to connect with family and friends. You can play games via the internet, host a virtual watch party, start a book club, or just catch up with each other. You can also take classes virtually at the Batavia Virtual Recreation Center, like our popular fitness and yoga classes, without even leaving your house. It’s a great way to stay connected!

Support Local There are so many amazing local businesses in Batavia that it’s easy to support local. With many options to shop online or order a takeout meal, be sure to support our local businesses during these challenging times. If you’re looking to shop for local Batavia gear, the Depot Museum gift shop is available online at bataviaparks.org/shop. Speaking of the Depot Museum, their opening day is coming up soon on Monday, March 1. The spring exhibit is a must see, titled “Heart and Hustle: Batavia Sports Legends.”

Think Warm Thoughts The swimming season will be here before you know it! The Spring Fun Guide is online now at bataviaparks.org. This is your guide to our egg hunt events and a preview of the Hall Quarry Beach season. If you or someone you know is looking for a seasonal job this summer, we are now hiring for lifeguards, cashiers, fitness instructors, camp counselors, and more! Visit bataviaparks.org/employment for all the opportunities.

We hope to see you soon – in person or virtually - at a Batavia Park District program or event. Stay warm!
