NORTH AURORA – A Kane County judge issued an arrest warrant for an Aurora man who allegedly provided the gun used in the Woodman’s Market grocery store shooting on June 1 that injured two, police announced in a news release.
Charges issued against Charles R. Mitchell Jr., 27, of the 1900 block of Lilac Lane, Aurora were four counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, the release stated.
Mitchell’s bond was set at $20,000, which means after he is arrested, he would need to post $2,000 to be released on bail, the release stated.
The most serious of the charges are two Class 2 felonies, punishable by four to seven years in prison and fines up to $25,000 if convicted. The judge is also authorized to give a sentence of 48 months of probation.
North Aurora officers had located David M. Williams and Mitchell on June 1 in an apartment in the 1800 block of Oak Street across from Woodman’s Market, the release stated.
At that time, Williams, Mitchell and a female were taken into custody for questioning.
Mitchell and the female were released that evening while Williams was charged with felony aggravated battery with a firearm, four counts of armed robbery and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Woodman’s shooting, the release stated.
The condition of the 17-year-old teen boy who was shot in the neck improved from critical and he was released from the hospital, the release stated.
The condition of the 19-year-old man who was shot in the leg is unknown, the release stated.
According to Kane County court records, Mitchell pleaded guilty April 18, 2018 to felony charges of resisting a police officer and retail theft in an agreement not to be prosecuted for aggravated battery to a police officer. He received a fine and 12 months of probation, records show.
North Aurora police continue to investigate the shooting.
