Carpentersville man charged with reckless homicide in West Dundee car crash

The May 8 crash killed a Hoffman Estates resident

A 19-year-old Carpentersville man is facing charges for a car crash that killed a Hoffman Estates man on May 8.

Dereck R. Kelly, of the 100 block of Kings Road, was charged July 6 with reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony, and driving on a revoked license, a Class A misdemeanor, in the crash that killed 36-year-old Carl Bley, according to a news release from Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser’s office.

Kane County prosecutors allege that between 11:30 a.m. and noon May 8, Kelly was driving at a high rate of speed north on South Eighth Street (Route 31) in West Dundee. As he approached the intersection of Strom Drive, driving recklessly and at least 25 mph over the posted 35 mph limit, he struck the vehicle Bley was driving, the release stated.

Bley died May 9 at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin as a result of injuries suffered in the crash. Kelly’s license was revoked at the time of the crash, the release stated.

Kelly was charged after an investigation by the West Dundee Police Department and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Kane County Judge Julia Yetter set Kelly’s bail at $100,000, with 10% ($10,000) to apply for bond. His next court appearance is set for July 23.
