Kane County Chronicle Athlete of Week: Gavin Sarvis, Burlington Central, basketball, senior

Burlington Central's Gavin Sarvis

Name: Gavin Sarvis

School: Burlington Central

Sport: Basketball, senior

Why he was selected: Sarvis scored 15 points in a victory over Jacobs last week. Sarvis was voted Athlete of the Week by Kane County Chronicle readers. Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson caught up with Sarvis to discuss his season and more. The Athlete of the Week is presented by Don McCue Chevrolet in St. Charles.

Bartelson: How do you put your competitive drive into words?

Sarvis: I have always been very competitive, and I have always had a ‘go’ mentality. [I’m] always trying to score or make the nice pass to extend our lead to give our bench players as much playing time as possible at the end of the game.

Bartelson: What’s something that those on the outside of the team don’t get to see everyday, but paints a picture of how close you all are?

Sarvis: A lot of us are already friends outside of basketball, so we have great chemistry.

Bartelson: What is something [Burlington Central] coach [Brett] Porto has instilled in you personally that has made you a better player?

Sarvis: During my time as a role player [in earlier seasons], I felt like Porto went harder on me because he knew I had potential and I think that drove me to be better.

Bartelson: What’s the most important aspect of leadership to you?

Sarvis: Leading by example, I take every practice or game like it’s my last.

Bartelson: Do you want to play collegiately? And if you do, what’s part of the criteria for a program you’re looking for?

Sarvis: I do want to play collegiately. I am leaning more toward basketball than football.

Bartelson: Who is a guy in the rotation that is impressing you and why?

Sarvis: Trestan [Wagner] is our first guy off the bench and does a lot for us. He gets hot fast and plays hard defense for us.
