Wrestling: Four area wrestlers in Class 3A finals

St. Charles East’s Ben Davino faces off against Sandburg’s Sammie Hayes in the Class 3A 120lb. semifinals at State Farm Center in Champaign. Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, in Champaign.

Marmion junior 113-pounder Jameson Garcia, St. Charles East sophomore 120-pounder Ben Davino, Batavia junior 138-pounder Kaden Fetterolf and Marmion 170-pound senior Tyler Perry all will vie for IHSA Class 3A state championship titles on Saturday night.

Garcia will face Mt. Carmel’s Damian Resendez. Davino, who has one loss all season and was undefeated as an IWCOA state champion last year, headlines for the Saints against Loyola’s Massey Odiotti.

Fetterolf has a tall task against 48-1 senior Kole Brower from Moline, but came from behind in the semifinals against previously-undefeated Stevenson standout, Cole Rhemrev. Perry squares off against 47-0 junior Brayden Thompson.

Batavia’s Ino Garcia (106), Aidan Huck (113) and Cael Andrews (145) all advanced to the top eight in their respective brackets for Saturday.

In the first round of the consolation bracket, Garcia defeated Sandburg’s Rocco Hayes in a 7-0 decision before finishing the afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Belvedere North’s Brayden Tuenissen. Huck was pinned in his quarterfinal match against Fremd’s Evan Gosz before rebounding against York’s Zack Parisi in the wrestleback. Andrews fell in his quarterfinal against Fremd’s Charlie Fifield, but also rallied for another day against Marmion’s Tegan Chumbley in a 3-2 decision.

In the 182-pound second round consolation match against Downers Grove North’s Ben Bielawski, Jackson Tonkovich fell in a 6-1 decision.

Marmion’s Donny Pigoni (106), Collin Carrigan (152) and Jack Lesher (182) are also in the top eight in their brackets.

Pigoni defeated Glenbard North’s Kalani Khiev in a 6-0 decision in the first round of the consolation bracket before then winning in sudden victory over Mt. Prospect’s Joel Muehlenbeck. Carrigan fell in his quarterfinal match to Conant’s Ethan Stiles in a 7-1 decision before answering back in a 7-1 decision over Edwardsville’s Jorden Johnson. Lesher defeated Tonkovich in the quarterfinal 2-1 and then lost to Libertyville’s Josh Knudten 4-1.

St. Charles East’s Tyler Guerra (132), Gavin Connolly (145) and Austin Barret (285) advanced for a top eight medal.

Guerra won by forfeit in the quarterfinal to Downers South’s Luke Swan before losing to Rich Township’s Nasir Bailey in the semifinal. Connolly won a pair of successive decisions over Mt. Prospect’s Damien Puma and Lane’s Finn Merrill 4-2 and 5-0, respectively. Barrett lost in the quarterfinal to Mt. Carmel’s Ryan Boersma by fall before rebounding in a 4-1 decision over Joliet West’s Wyatt Schmitt.
