Local sports roundup for Saturday, Jan. 22

Northern Illinois held off a late fourth quarter push from Eastern Michigan at the EMU Convocation Center in Ypsilanti on Saturday, picking up an 85-76 win on the road.

A’Jah Davis led the Huskies with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the victory as they improved to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the MAC. Chelby Coker scored 17 points and had six assists in the win and Janae Poisson added 16 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Northern Illinois University 85, Miami (Ohio) 82: At Oxford (Ohio), NIU struggled down the stretch, allowing Miami of Ohio to rally in the final minutes of regulation, force an overtime and ultimately win 85-82 in bonus time at Millett Hall.

Keshawn Williams had a strong offensive presence for the Huskies (5-10) with 28 points in spite of the loss, while Trendon Hankerson added 16 points and Kaleb Thornton scored 14.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hinckley-Big Rock 59, Alden-Hebron 35: At Hinckley, the Royals earned a comfortable win at home thanks to 31 points from Ashleigh Wackerlin.

Wackerlin scored 29 of her 31 points in the second and third quarters as H-BR dashed away from the visiting Giants.

Marengo 45, Genoa-Kingston 40: At Marengo, Bryce Boylen scored 17 points for the Cogs in a losing effort on the road.

BOYS BOWLING

Hononegah Sectional: At Viking Lanes, the Spartans missed qualifying for the state finals by 165 pins in South Beloit.

Sycamore ended its season by finishing 11th out of 16 teams.
