Former Sauk Valley Community College president Cole dies at 85

Former Sauk Valley Community College President George E. Cole died Nov. 14 at his home in Escanaba, Michigan. He was 85.

Cole was the second president of Sauk, succeeding Edward Sabol in 1972 and serving until 1980.

"Dr. Cole was a beloved Sauk leader who played a critical role in expanding access to Sauk's education to several area school districts, and his great passion for the arts was on full display as he and his wife Milly hosted annual community art festivals," now-President David Hellmich said. "Sauk's commitment to our communities is a shining example of his legacy."

Cole left Sauk to move back to his native Upper Peninsula, teaching part time at Bay de Noc Community College in his hometown until his retirement in 2006.

A celebration of life and a Marine Corps tribute is planned for July 17 in Escanaba.
