North Shore Gas introduces Bandit, the new Ambassadog for safe digging

CHICAGO – Dedicated digger Bandit has been voted the North Shore Gas Ambassadog for safe digging in the utility’s “Doggone it!” photo contest.

Bandit won an online contest against eight other North Shore canines. He also won a gift certificate for treats at Bentley’s Pet Stuff.

In his new role, Bandit will help educate community members about the importance of safe digging.

Bandit reminds everyone to call JULIE at 811 before you begin any digging projects to protect yourself and prevent damage to natural gas lines and other underground utilities. Activities such as landscaping, installing a mailbox and building a deck are among the projects that require a call to 811. In Illinois, people are asked to “paws” and call at least 48 hours ahead of work so that underground facilities can be located and marked before digging.

“We are thrilled that Bandit can help North Shore Gas spread the word about calling JULIE at 811 before you dig,” said Vanessa Hall, manager of media relations for the utility. “As more people are staying home and enjoying their yards, it’s especially important to get the word out about safe digging. Thanks to Bandit for joining our team.”

“Our new safety Ambassadog will help us raise awareness in the community about safe digging so that we can continue to create a culture of damage prevention,” said Ed King, manager – system integrity, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas.

North Shore Gas has 2,300 miles of underground pipelines for the distribution of natural gas in its service area. Natural gas and electric lines are buried underneath property throughout the area and could be in striking distance of anyone digging into the ground.
