ELGIN – A Bartlett woman was killed after she was hit by a car while riding her bike near the intersection of Purify Road and Raymond Drive in Elgin.
According to a news release from Kane County Coroner Rob Russell, Sandra Sampey, 52, was hit Tuesday evening. She was taken to AMITA St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where she was pronounced dead. A 58-year-old male cyclist was also critically injured in the accident.
According to a release from the Elgin Police Department, the driver fled on foot after the accident, but officers were able to apprehend the driver after a two-hour search. The suspect is believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident in the area of East Chicago Street and Villa Court.
An autopsy performed on Wednesday showed that Sampey's cause of death was multiple injuries due to the crash. Toxicology samples were sent for further analysis.
The Kane County Coroner's Office is working with the Elgin Police Department on the investigation, the release stated.
