This past week, 4-H and community members celebrated the culmination of the whole 4-H year with the annual 4-H shows at the Kendall County Fair.
“Our 4-H members work for months in their project areas to learn new things and develop skills, which they then demonstrate through 4-H exhibits and animal shows at the annual Kendall County Fair,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Youth Development program coordinator. “The 4-H shows and conference judging provide 4-H youth with valuable experience and feedback to continue growing and learning into the next year.”
With 100-plus project areas, 4-H youth can explore a variety of arts and sciences, citizenship and leadership, engineering and technology, and much more.
“4-H teaches students lifelong skills, such as leadership, community service and how to create healthy relationships with people who have similar, as well as different, interests as yourself,” said Madeline Cumbey, a nine-year member and the 2018 4-H Fair Queen. “4-H’ers learn how to participate as part of a team, while also learning how to excel as an individual. There is something for everyone in 4-H, whether it is STEM, art or agriculture, and anyone can pursue their passion in 4-H.”
In addition to this project work, 4-H members volunteer for their communities throughout the year. In turn, at the annual fair, scores of adult community members give back to 4-H through sharing their time and expertise at the 4-H events, and by sponsoring awards.
“We want to whole-heartedly thank all the Kendall County Fair volunteers, 4-H award sponsors, and 4-H superintendents, judges and other volunteers for giving our youth such an important experience each year,” said Eisnaugle. “Thank you also to our 4-H members and families for another special year.”
