Metra BNSF train strikes, kills pedestrian in La Grange

Metra commuters experience extensive delays

Commuters are experiencing extensive delays Thursday morning after a Metra train struck and killed a pedestrian along the BNSF line in La Grange.

At 6:22 a.m. April 20, La Grange police responded to the report of a train versus pedestrian incident near Peck and Hillgrove avenues, according to a Police Department news release.

The train involved was No. 1208, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 6:38 a.m., according to Metra.

As a result of the incident, the BNSF rail-grade crossings at Gilbert Avenue and Brainard Avenue were closed, the release stated.

Police anticipated the crossings would be closed until about 9:30 a.m. to complete the accident investigation, according to the release. Officers will be working with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and Metra to collect details of the incident.

Area Metra riders can board trains at the La Grange Road Station, the release stated.

The incident had halted inbound and outbound train movement east of Western Springs, according to Metra.
