BATAVIA – “Rent,” the hit Broadway musical, will take to the stage April 27 to 30 in Batavia. The show stars Batavia High School students and is directed by Dominic Cattero.
Performances of the Tony Award-winning show will be at 7:30 p.m. April 27 and 28 and 2 p.m. April 30 at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre. Prices range from $10 to $16.
A 6 p.m. performance April 29 will be followed by a special program by Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, the originators of the roles of Roger and Mark, respectively, from the Broadway production of “Rent,” according to a news release. Their 60-minute show is titled Acoustically Speaking: 20 Years of Friendship. At the conclusion, the cast will join the veteran professionals on stage. Tickets for the April 29 show cost $30 to $42.
The cast’s 46 Batavia High School student actors have been in rehearsals since early February, working to bring true emotional depth and feeling to their characters, according to the release.
The show stars freshmen Sophie Chahmirzadi, Bella Clarey, Landon Keller, Maisie Sweeney and Jeremiah Young, sophomores Demi Anderson, Jenna Breiten, Colin Callahan, Anna Harms, Nathan Knautz, Sarah Maher, Alexis Reyna, Nataleigh Rix, Cate Rocha, JD Rodriguez, Maisy Wilson, Shelby Woods and Lily Zofkie, juniors Vinnie Cesarone, Samanta Echevarria, Hannah Levin, Max Micheli, Emily O’Brien, Natalie Sweeney, Alex Toth, Meghan Tucker and Abigail Weiss, and seniors Elsa Bauerdick, Kyle Berry, Cassidy Chadwell, Ivy Flessen, Ariana Garcia, Allison Gotfryd, Taleen Jabrieh, Justin Knautz, Maddy Kozar, Bobby Martinez, Tori McKeehan, Kailey Nelson, Marcelo Nylund, Bridget O’Brien, Ian Samsami, Matt Skirmont, Ryan Taylor, Cameron Tucker and Shauna Winters.
The crew was tasked with constructing a two-story set that is the largest ever built at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, the release stated. BHS student crew members are freshmen Ian Farrar, Jason Jakubaitis and Colin Steele, sophomores Joshua Bamrick, Liam Doherty, Emily Ehrhagt and Kobi Finfrock, juniors Kate Domeier, Lauren Gross, Erika Knutson, Tommy Neumann, Mary Clare Perreault and Ethan Slaughter, and seniors Adam Arroyo, Ryan Bamrick, Max Bergie, Cameron Erickson, Brandon Johnson, Casey Kirk and Rachel Lingafelter.
The musical score will be played by BHS student musicians, who will perform live on stage. They are JJ Burke, Mia Chahmirzadi, John Hix, John Le, Ariane Omerza, Aidan Perrault and Kevin Sliczniak.
The musical, based loosely on Puccini’s “La Boheme,” follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create on New York’s Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
