To know Collin Slattery is to know he loves his golf.

The former BCR Golfer of the Year (2010) from Princeton has been assistant club pro at Irondequoit Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., since May as he pursues a career in the golf profession.

Slattery’s golf coach at Princeton High School, Brian Church, for one is not surprised to see how Slattery has stayed in the game.

“He’s got a passion for the industry I haven’t seen in a long time,” Church said. “He wants to give it a go and try to make a career out of it. I’m pretty proud of the kid. He’s got a lot of drive and motivation.

“It’s really good to see him do what he’s doing. He’s overcome some obstacles in terms of people thinking he couldn’t move up the ladder. I think he’s very motivated. I think he’s going to do really, really well. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Church said he was called for a reference about Slattery and expressed that he believed Slattery would be “a good fit, a guy that would show up and do exactly what he needed to do.”

Recently, Slattery put his teaching to action. Slattery won the Western New York PGA Assistants’ Championship at Stafford Country Club Aug. 26. He shot a 70-75 +1 to win the crown by two shots.

He cashed out a $1,000 pay day for his effort.

With that victory, Slattery qualified for the National PGA Assistants’ Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., at the end of October. The national tournament will have all of the best assistants from across the country.

Slattery plans on playing in some mini tour events “to see how I stack up against some of the better players trying to make it on the pro tour.” However, at this point, Slattery said his main focus is on becoming a head PGA professional rather than playing professionally.

At Princeton High School, Slattery was the regional medalist, leading the Tigers to their first regional championship in five years. He was also the NCIC Conference MVP and medalist at sectional (third) and state (eighth) his senior season.

He went on to play two years at Illinois Central College before going to the University of Northern Iowa to play.

Slattery was the 2014 Illinois Valley Open champion.
