AURORA – Rosary blitzed East Aurora in Thursday’s West Aurora girls soccer tournament opener, winning, 10-0.
“We scored one minute in and just kept on going,” Royals coach Brian Frank said.
Midfielder Maria Witte and forward Quincy Kellett, both seniors, kept Rosary (2-0) churning.
Witte contributed five goals and one assist to the attack, while Kellett had three goals and four assists.
Rosary led 8-0 at halftime, and a junior varsity-heavy lineup kept control in an abbreviated second half.
“Offensively, we’re moving the ball much better than we did last year,” Frank said. “We’re attacking in numbers instead of just sending one or two ahead. Those both just make things more difficult for the opponent to defend. And it seems like the team is playing more like a unit than as a bunch of individuals at this time.”
Rosary, on its spring break, was missing a handful of players. Kaneland, which lost, 5-1, to the host Blackhawks later in the day, faced the same predicament.
One major difference: The Royals seemed to know they’d be shorthanded ahead of time.
Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said scheduling confusion sent him scrambling to call up several athletes to fill out the lineup and bench.
Six starters – including standouts Madi Jurcenko and Courtney Diddell – were missing for the Knights, who fell to 3-1.
“We tried our best, but that was really not our squad,” Parillo said. “It happens. What are you going to do?”
Paige Guyton scored the Knights’ goal, converting an assist from Nicole Koczka.
