Cocoon marks 20 years in Geneva

GENEVA – For 20 years, Cocoon has been selling unusual gifts, jewelry and furniture at its location at 212 S. Third St., Geneva.

“It seems pretty surreal,” owner Sherie McGowan said. “I just started renting space, and the rest is history. The first five years, we were downstairs, and then we have both the upstairs and downstairs. We love being in Geneva.”

Cocoon now has 10 rooms and also carries baby things, soaps, lotions and perfumes. Among its furniture offerings are sofas, chairs and coffee tables.

“Our main focus is jewelry and gifts,” McGowan said. “People like to come here for unusual gifts, and we have events.”

To mark two decades in business, McGowan said the store will offer a different special every month. Those who wish to participate should do so through the store's Facebook page or join the email list, McGowan said.

McGowan, 61, said she got into the retail business after the youngest of her three children went to kindergarten.

“I went back to school and got a degree in commercial design,” McGowan said. “I started working in town to see if I wanted to do anything. ... I love [Cocoon]. Every day is different – like an adventure.”
