Prep roundup: Downers Grove South's Dominic Tommsaone notches three top-10 state gymnastics finishes

Dominic Tommasone notched three top-10 finishes at the state gymnastics meet. The freshman was sixth on vault (9.250), seventh on pommel horse (8.50) and 10th on parallel bars (7.95), and he also placed 11th in the all-around with a score of 49.70.

Evan Baird was 10th on vault with a score of 8.80. Brock Herion (rings, vault, all-around) also competed at state.

As a team, the Mustangs were eighth with a score of 138.80.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Downers Grove North

Strah Sopcic finished ninth on still rings (8.40) and placed 23rd in the all-around competition with a score of 47.350 at the state meet.

Jeremy Guinn finished 13th on pommel horse (7.20), and Tristan Leger (rings) and Dylan Oddo (floor) also competed at state.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Downers Grove North

Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker won the 100-meter high hurdles (15.29 seconds) and Michaela Hackbarth won the 800 run (2:14.45) and earned state meet berths as Downers Grove South's girls track and field team won the title at its own sectional meet.

The Mustangs scored 67 points to hold off Hinsdale Central (65) and Lockport (59.5).

Several other South athletes booked spots at the state meet.

Abby Kargol (11:04.80) and Haley Albers (11:13.44) qualified in the 3,200 run with second and third place finishes, respectively.

Hackbarth (second in the 400) and Amanda Thate finished (third in the 1,600) qualified for state.

The 4x200 team of Nicole Muccianti, Soren Umali, Kiera James and Dixon-Tucker finished second to make it to state.

Downers Grove North

Emma Moravec, Margaret Schaub, Zayna Jan and Stephanie Urbancik teamed up for a first-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay at the Class 3A Downers Grove South sectional meet.

The quartet clocked a time of 9:20.86 to earn a spot at this weekend's state meet.

The 4x400 relay team of Hannah Henry, Jan, Moravec and Urbancik qualified for state with a runner-up time of 4:05.73.

Urbancik earned a solo state berth in the 800 (third, 2:17.41).

Westmont

Annie Carlson's win in the 300-meter hurdles at Friday' Lisle sectional meet highlighted a night in which the Westmont sophomore earned three berths at the Class 1A state track meet.

Carlson won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.09 seconds. She also finished second in both the 100 hurdles (15.64) and triple jump (33 feet, 9 inches) to book state berths.

Senior Maggie Arndt also earned a spot at the state meet by finishing second in the 1,600 run (5:24.38).

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Downers Grove North

Ryan Clevenger won the 3,200-meter run in rather comfortable fashion at the West Suburban Silver meet hosted by York on Friday. Clevenger's time of 9:07.22 was more than 15 seconds faster than the runner-up.

The Trojans swept the long distance events as Zack Smith won the 1,600 in 4:14.01.

Nick Janicki and Max Sale went 1-2 in the discus with marks of 162 feet, 4 inches and 150-5, respectively.

Jazz Charrier won the long jump (21-5) and Nick Stiechman took second in the shot put (48-9.5). Eric Wisz was third in pole vault (13-6).

Charles Creamer finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.74) and third in the 100 dash (11.42).

The 4x800 relay team was second (7:55.36) while the 4x100 quartet was third in 43.41.

Downers Grove South

Jacob Amiri won both the 800-meter (1:59.32) and 1,600 run (4:32.06), Nick Kersting won the 110 hurdles (16.09) and the 4x400 relay clocked a winning time of 3:31.36 at Thursday's West Suburban Gold meet at Leyden.

Jon Osei took second in the 400 dash (50.60). David Fish was third in the 1,600 (4:35.56). Both the 4x100 relay (45.70) and 4x800 quartet (8:34.55) placed third.

In field events, Danny Campagna won shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 5 inches. Josh Jones was second in the triple jump (41-0.5), Tim Tully was second in discus (128-2), and Tom Ziemen (eight feet) was third in the pole vault.

BADMINTON

Downers Grove North

Kiley Pooler went 4-2 at the state tournament to help the Trojans score six points and finish 12th as a team.

Pooler started her state tourney with three straight wins to advance to the quarterfinals and finish in the top eight.

Kelsey Stallter and Lucy Lu went 2-2 in the doubles draw, winning their first two matches. The tandem of Shatien Jordan and Maria McConaughy went 1-2.

Numbers to know

100 Number of games Downers Grove South baseball players Joe Becht and Zac Taylor have played in during their careers. They are just the fifth and sixth players in program history to reach the milestone.


12-7-3 Record at the end of the regular season for Downers Grove North's soccer team. The Trojans tied Hinsdale South 1-1 in their regular season finale and went on to defeat Morton 1-0 in a regional playoff game on May 21.


6 Number of first place finishes for Downers Grove South boys tennis at the West Suburban Gold conference meet. The Mustangs won all three singles titles.

3-1 Score of Westmont's baseball win against Lisle on May 14. Anthony Alessi, Charlie Donovan and Anthony Powers had RBIs and Austin Loehman pitched a complete game.
