DuPage Medical Group brings 3-D mammography to Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN — DuPage Medical Group expanded its diagnostic imaging services Tuesday by offering 3-D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, at its location in Glen Ellyn.

3-D mammography allows radiologists to better identify and characterize individual breast structures by being able to scroll through the layers of the breast in 1-millimeter increments rather than viewing all layers of tissue superimposed, according to a DuPage Medical Group news release. This layer-by-layer approach removes overlapping breast tissue, which can hide lesions.

3-D mammography is offered at DuPage Medical Group’s Lisle and Naperville locations, where the equipment has been used for several months.

“The American Cancer Society estimates more than 9,000 Illinois women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013,” said Anne Zimmermann, DuPage Medical Group radiologist. “The sophistication of 3-D mammography provides patients with peace of mind, knowing that any abnormalities can be detected earlier, allowing radiologists to find the subtle signs of cancer in its initial stages.”

The 3-D mammography process is similar to traditional mammograms, lasting just seconds longer than 2-D digital mammograms, according to the release.

Those interested can schedule a 3-D mammography appointment at the DuPage Medical Group facility in Glen Ellyn as well as Lisle and Naperville.
