Physicians recognized for service to children

The DeKalb County Board of Health at its March meeting recognized Dr. Michael Thornton and Dr. Ronald Feldmann of Kishwaukee Medical Associates for providing well-child exams to children served through the DeKalb County Health Department's Well Child Program.

In 1987, under the leadership of Thornton, the Well Child Program was started at the health department. That same year, Feldmann joined his colleague in providing physician service to the program.

Since its start, the Well Child Program has provided 26,500 exams to children. According to Karen Grush, public health administrator, Thornton and Feldmann provided many of the exams assuring the children were growing and developing normally, identifying health problems and providing parents with guidance regarding health concerns.

Grush says Thornton and Feldmann are strong advocates for all children, but especially children who lacked the resources to access care through traditional avenues.

The health department discontinued the Well Child Program in December as part of a deficit-reduction plan to address reduced revenues. As the Community Cares Clinic of Kishwaukee HealthSystem agreed to accept health department pediatric patients, these children now have access to preventive as well as sick care.

Dr. Linda Liston, president of the DeKalb County Board of Health, says Thornton and Feldmann have been a tremendous asset to the health department and thanked them for making a difference in the lives of many DeKalb County children.

Elburn Cooperative
acquires Stover Brothers Trucking

After 65 years in the heart of Elburn, Stover Brothers Trucking has found a new home. The company closed its doors March 31 and opened them April 1 as part of Sycamore-based Elburn Cooperative Co.

Stover Brothers has a long history with Elburn Cooperative Company.

It started hauling grain for Elburn Cooperative in 1958 and has been the company's primary hauler of grain and fertilizer for more than 40 years.

"It is a perfect fit for us," Roger Stover said in a news release. "We've grown with Elburn Cooperative, and our guys are who the farmers see as the face of Elburn Cooperative Company."

Founded in 1946 by Duane "Dink" Stover and his brother, Eugene, Stover Brothers Trucking had a modest beginning. The brothers ran two trucks out of their father's blacksmith shop on the corner of Kansas and Main streets.

They hired their first employee in 1950, and eventually replaced the original structure with the garage that still sits on the same corner today.

As time passed and demand increased, Stover Brothers began adding cow hides, grain, fertilizer and oil to its cargo.

As Elburn Cooperative Company grew, Stover Brothers grew into a full-fledged operation with 13 trucks and drivers. So when John Husk, Elburn Cooperative Company general manager, learned the family business was for sale, he jumped at the chance to give Stover Brothers a new home.

"It's like a family joining a family," Paul Stover said in the release. "With Elburn Cooperative Company, we can still give customers the unique level of service that only a family business can provide."
