David Higgs

DIXON – David E. Higgs, 75, of Dixon, died Friday, June 4, 2010, at SwedishAmerican Hospital, Rockford.

He was born July 28, 1934, in Dixon, the son of Leslie and Addie (DeShaw) Higgs.

He worked at Brooks Drug Store, then owned and operated Dave’s Toys, Hobbies and More, Dixon, for more than 25 years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dixon, Lee County Board, Lee County Tourism Council, St. Mary School Board, and was chairman of the Dixon Parochial Education Fund. He also was a member, and past Grand Knight, of Dixon Knights of Columbus Council 690. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He married Barbara Cleary at St. Patrick Church, Dixon, on June 18, 1955.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Patrick Higgs; and one brother, Duane Higgs.

He is survived by his wife of Dixon; one son, Tim (Linda) Higgs of Aurora; one daughter, Kathleen (Kevin) Knack of Dixon; one daughter-in-law, Peg Higgs of Dixon; seven grandchildren, Maggie and Michael Higgs, Mary, Matthew, and Jonathan Higgs, and Connor and K.C. Knack; one brother, Don Higgs of Marlton, N.J.;  and several nieces and nephews.

Prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, Dixon, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, Dixon, with the Rev. Michael Morrissey officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Dixon. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established.
