Will County jail inmate tossed urine at guard, spat in other guard’s face: cops

An inmate in the Will County jail faces more felony charges after he was accused of tossing a cup filled with urine at a guard and spitting in the face of another guard.

On Feb. 11, jail staff members were preparing to conduct a search of the cell for Deshaun Cockream, 22, of Joliet, according to Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

As a guard was standing near the cell door, Cockream grabbed a cup filled with urine and “threw the contents at the door towards the officer,” Hoffmeyer said.

“The officer was struck with some of the contents,” Hoffmeyer said.

The jail’s Emergency Response Team responded to the scene to assist with the removal of Cockream from the jail, Hoffmeyer said.

“Upon [them] doing so, Cockream lunged and spit in the face of a correctional deputy,” Hoffmeyer said.

After the incident, prosecutors charged Cockream with two counts of aggravated battery. A criminal complaint alleged Cockream spat on a guard and threw liquid substance at another guard.

Cockream has been in the jail since June 3, according to the county jail log.

Last year, Cockream spat in one guard’s face and head-butted another, Hoffmeyer said.

Cockream was charged with aggravated battery for both incidents. Those cases remain open.
