Miami scammer ripped off Plainfield resident: cops

A Miami woman lied about needing bail money to dupe a Plainfield resident out of $20,000, police said, but after she was arrested she really did have to come up with $10,000 to get out of the Will County jail.

Danielle Molitor, 28, was transported from Florida to the Will County jail Nov. 5 and booked on charges of theft, obtaining money from a financial institution and wire fraud, according to the sheriff’s office.

The warrant for Molitor’s arrest carried a $100,000 bond, records show. Molitor posted $10,000 for her release the day after she was jailed.

Molitor’s arrest stemmed from a scam she pulled on a Plainfield resident earlier this year, according to Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid of the Plainfield Police Department.

In February, “a resident of Plainfield filed a report advising they were contacted, via telephone, by a person they believed to be a relative,” McQuaid said in an email.

“The relative indicated they were arrested and needed bail money,” McQuaid said. “Believing this to be true, the victim wired $20,000. Eventually the victim realized it was not their relative and it was a scam, so they contacted the police.”

The law tracked the money down to an account belonging to Molitor, McQuaid said, and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
