A Plainfield man shot a woman he previously dated before turning the gun on himself in what police said was an attempted murder-suicide outside a Shorewood hotel.
Shorewood police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot of the La Quinta Inn & Suites on the Interstate 55 Northeast Frontage Road shortly after 10:30 p.m., Shorewood Deputy Police Chief Jason Barten said.
The investigation of the incident revealed that Brandon Mills, 36, of Plainfield, and a 28-year-old woman he previously dated arrived at the hotel at separate times and in separate vehicles, Barten said.
After Mills waited in the hotel parking lot for several hours, he confronted the woman and another man outside the hotel, Barten said.
“After a brief discussion in the parking lot, Mills retrieved a firearm he concealed on his person and fired at the female, striking her several times,” Barten said. “Mills then turned the firearm onto himself and fired.”
Officers recovered a firearm at the scene and crime scene investigators also recovered several items of “evidential value consistent with apparent attempted murder, suicide,” Barten said.
Mills was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
The woman underwent emergency surgery and remains in the hospital, Barten said.
The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force provided assistance to the Shorewood Police Department with the preliminary investigation and crime scene processing, Barten said.
