Inmate accused of striking, biting Will County jail staff member

Plainfield man previously charged with domestic battery

An inmate at the Will County jail was charged with aggravated battery in connection with accusations that he struck and bit a correctional staff member.

Keith Gaines, 26, of the 13600 block of Jonesport Circle in Plainfield was accused in a criminal complaint of striking and biting a correctional staff member “about the body” on Tuesday, according to court records.

Prosecutors filed aggravated battery charges against Gaines, who has been in jail on charges of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery and domestic battery.

Gaines’ bond was increased by $10 as a result of the new charges, putting his total bond at $100,010, according to court records.

Since March, at least four inmates were charged with attacking guards at the jail.

Cordell Franklin, 27, of Steger was charged in March after police said he pushed and punched two guards.

In April, Gregory Rideout, 21, of Joliet was charged after police said he struck a guard in the face multiple times.

At the time of the incident, Rideout made a “gun gesture” at the guard and put his hand in the guard’s face, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

The guard told Rideout to get his hand out of his face, and Rideout allegedly struck the guard in the arm and then in the face multiple times, Hoffmeyer said.

Another inmate, Deshaun Cockream, 22, of Joliet was charged in June after police said he spit in one guard’s face and head-butted another.

Roger Thompson, 29, of Romeoville was charged after police said he struck a guard “about the head” on July 6 and resisted the guard’s efforts to escort him through the jail.
