Attempted murder charge filed in alleged attack on officer at Riverwalk Homes

A charge of attempted murder was filed against one of the two men accused of savagely attacking a Joliet police officer at the Riverwalk Homes Sunday night.

Antonio Tobar, 35, was charged with aggravated battery in addition to attempted murder. His bond was set at $1 million, records show.

Tobar, a resident of the Riverwalk Homes, attacked an officer from behind and put him in a headlock while he was grappling with another Riverwalk Homes resident, 39-year-old James Webb, police said.

The officer briefly lost consciousness, according to police.

While the officer was engaged with Tobar, Webb began stomping on the officer’s head and spitting on him,” police said.

The officer shot Tobar with a Taser, police said, but he was not subdued.

“During the struggle, the officer was able to request emergency assistance, according to police. “A Riverwalk Homes security guard intervened in the struggle, ending the attack upon the officer.”

More officers then arrived and Tobar and Webb were taken into custody, police said.

The officer was transported to AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was treated and has since been released from care, according to police.

Both Tobar and Webb were booked into the Will County jail and remain in custody.

Webb was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault. His bond was set at $500,000, records show.
