An Oswego man armed with a gun outside a Shorewood hotel was shot and killed by a police officer, police said.

Jose DeJesus-Hernandez, 40, was pronounced deceased at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the LaQuinta Inn at 19715 Northeast Frontage Road, according to a statement from the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.

In a news release, Shorewood Police Chief Philip Arnold said his officers were sent to the hotel just after 11:30 p.m. Monday in response to a “man requesting an ambulance in the rear of the parking lot.”

The man who made the call hung up and a dispatcher called him back and asked him why he requested medical assistance, according to a separate news release from Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force officials.

“The unknown male caller advised the dispatcher that, ‘He did not want to wait there all day,’” task force officials said.

The caller hung up again.

As Shorewood police officers responded to the scene, they saw an “unknown male” brandishing a firearm, task force officials said.

Officers took protective cover behind available barriers and shouted commands at the armed man, task force officials said. Shorewood police requested assistance from other departments.

“It was reported to responding personnel that the suspect entered his vehicle, ignoring commands,” task force officials said.

The armed man fired one round inside of his vehicle and a Shorewood police officer returned fire, task force officials said. Officers could not detect any movement inside the vehicle.

Because officers were not able to conduct a threat assessment of the situation, a small contingent of the Will County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were sent to the scene, task force officials said.

The sheriff’s office also used a drone to assess the situation.

“With the use of the drone, responding personnel were able to confirm that the suspect had been incapacitated,” task force officials said.

SWAT members approached the suspect’s vehicle, removed him and attempted to perform life-saving measures, task force officials said.

Paramedics on scene assessed the man’s condition and determined he showed no signs of life. The man was later identified as DeJesus-Hernandez.

The task force is also investigating a Crest Hill police sergeant’s fatal shooting of a 30-year-old Matthew Parks, whom task force officials said stabbed a Crest Hill police officer in the leg with a knife before he was shot on Monday evening.
