Diaper drive, pinwheel garden raised awareness of child abuse

The Lincoln-Way GFWC Junior Woman’s Club collected and donated 3,400 diapers for Joliet=area agencies

The Lincoln-Way GFWC Junior Woman’s Club collected 3,400 diapers during its Blue Pinwheel Diaper Drive in March and April in commemoration of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, which was held in April.

In addition, the club “planted” a blue pinwheel in a garden in the New Lenox Commons each time members collected a package of diapers.

Members then donated all the diapers to Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet and the Crisis Center for South Suburbia.

The New Lenox Library, Turning Pointe Dance Studios in New Lenox and Lockport, and Mitchell’s Flower Shop in Orland Park hosted drop-off bins for the donated diapers.

GFWC Illinois is a “philanthropic organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service,” according to its website.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) organization has 80,000 and a presence in all 50 states in the U.S. as well as 12 other countries, the website said.

GFWC Illinois has more than 200 clubs in three levels of membership: General, Junior, and Juniorettes (ages 14 to 18). The Lincoln-Way GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Illinois is based in New Lenox.
