Joliet, Plainfield student journalists headed to state competition

Students attend Joliet West High School, and all 4 District 202 high schools

Eight student journalists from Joliet West High School and 19 student journalists from Plainfield Community Consolidated High School District will compete in the IHSA Virtual State Series Competition on Saturday.

Joliet West High School journalists took home a first place win in the team award category at the IHSA Journalism Sectionals on April 10, which was held virtually this year. Joliet West then advanced in 10 categories, according to a news release from Joliet Township High School District 204.

Madison Horvat, Sophia Delgadillo, Kelly Rappaport, Kiersten Jordan, Megan Krok, Haley Maser, Lawson Sizemore and Louie Mendoza qualified for the state competition.

IHSA Sectional award winners from Joliet West include Madison Horvat, second place in advertising; Sophia Delgadillo, second place in broadcast news; Kelly Rappaport, first place in yearbook copywriting, second place in copy editing; Kiersten Jordan, third place in cartooning and first place in infographics; Jordyn Bew, fifth place in editorial writing; Megan Krok, second place in feature writing and fourth place in newspaper design; Haley Maser, third place in headline writing and fifth place in news writing; Emily Vayda, sixth place in photo storytelling; Natalie Bartelt, fifth place in review writing; Lawson Sizemore, second place in sports writing; Trevor Gould and Kailey Staniszewski, fourth place in video news; Louie Mendoza, third place in yearbook layout and fifth place in yearbook theme development; and Emma Miller, fourth place in yearbook caption writing.

All four high schools from District 202 also competed in the IHSA Journalism Sectionals on April 10.

Plainfield South High School earned second place overall and Plainfield High School – Central Campus came in third place overall, according to a news release from District 202.
