Need food? Come out to one of these Northern Illinois Food Bank events

Free food will be distributed on a drive-thru basis Saturday in Joliet and on Tuesday in Plainfield

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, Joliet Junior College will partner with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to host a pop-up market at parking lot E3 on JJC’s main campus, located at 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet, according to a news release from JJC.

Attendees should enter off the Houbolt Road entrance. JJC police will direct attendees to the market, JJC said.

No identification or proof of address or income is required to receive food, JJC said.

Should weather be inclement, a decision to cancel the event will be made by 3 p.m. Friday, JJC said.

Other pop-up markets at JJC will be held March 20, April 3, April 17, May 15, May 29, June 12 and June 26, JJC said.

Then on Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m., the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mobile pantry will distribute free food at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, located at15629 S. Rt. 59 in Plainfield, according to a news release from St. Mary.

Recipients must arrive by 4 p.m. as food will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis while supplies last. Boxes and bags will be provided, St. Mary said.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides 250,000 meals a day in the 13 counties the food bank serves. It also partners with 900 food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens and feeding programs for seniors and youth, according to a news release from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Nearly 1,000 volunteers help the food bank to evaluate, repack and distribute food, the release said. Distribution centers are located in Joliet, Geneva, Park City and Rockford.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank recently began a five-year collaborative journey with a new Strategic Plan: UNITE, to increase collaboration among its network of 900 agencies, feeding programs and supporters, the release said.
