Dixon native serves aboard Navy warship

EVERETT, Wash. – Lt. Junior Grade Devin James Nehring, a native of Dixon, Illinois, serves the U.S. Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer operating out of Everett, Washington, according to a release issued by the Navy Office of Community Outreach.

Nehring joined the Navy seven years ago. Earlier deployments were in support of U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, Nehring serves aboard USS Sampson based in Everett, Washington.

”I enjoyed my years in the Army, but after getting my degree I wanted to serve again as an officer,” said Nehring. “My wife is a chief in the Navy, so I decided to join the Navy as an officer.”

Nehring attended Dixon High School and graduated in 2007. Today, Nehring uses skills and values similar to those found in Dixon.

”I detasseled and walked beans during summer jobs as a kid with my friends and that helped me learn what hard work and teamwork is,” said Nehring.

A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system. More than 300 sailors serve aboard USS Sampson.

Nehring said the ship’s mission is to ensure safe use of the sea lanes for trade or navigation. ”I have the opportunity to serve and lead sailors and make an impact in their lives,” added Nehring.
