Tips to Help Students Cope as the Pandemic Continues

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the routines of many in the past year, and kids are no exception. As the world transitions to a new normal, here are three tips to help school-age students with their mental, physical, and spiritual health:

1. Regular exercise

Physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing certain health conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another perk: students who exercise regularly tend to have a better quality of sleep. Participating in youth sports can also help students develop both teamwork and leadership skills as well as improve their mental health. At least 60 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended.

2. Eat well

Nutritious meals and snacks can go a long way in keeping immune systems strong and supporting brain development. On the flip side, consuming too many processed foods and sugar-filled snacks and drinks can lead to fatigue, inability to concentrate, mood fluctuations, and dips in energy levels. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children consume a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Additionally, staying properly hydrated with water helps keep the body and mind running efficiently.

3. Lead a faith-filled life

There is comfort and security as a follower of Jesus and a child of God. Daily devotions and prayer, as well as attending worship and Christian education classes, help to bring reassurance of God’s faithfulness, love, and grace to students who are challenged with anxiety. Through prayer, students can share their anxieties, ask for guidance, and experience the peace of God, which transcends all understanding. All students and their families are invited to nurture their spiritual lives through worship, education, and connectivity at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Crystal Lake.
