A man was charged Saturday with attempted murder after Crystal Lake police responded to a domestic incident involving a stabbing, Crystal Lake Police Department officials said.

Mark Alex, 57, who officials said has no current address, was arrested Saturday afternoon and charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated domestic battery and one count of endangering the life of a child after police say he injured a woman using a hammer and a hatchet, according to a news release Sunday.

The woman had significant injuries to her head, and after being treated by first responders, was taken to the hospital where she remained Sunday, officials said. A child was also at the home when the incident occurred, but was uninjured and has been placed in the care of another adult.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a domestic incident around 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Skyridge Drive, according to the release. While on their way, officials learned that the man suspected of the attack had left the scene, but he was found a few hours later in Algonquin.

“This was an isolated incident that resulted in the arrest of the offender,” the police department said in the release. “There is no danger to the public regarding this incident.”

Alex was taken to the McHenry County Jail for a bond hearing, according to the release and jail log.
