Two receive minor burn injuries during Richmond fire Sunday

Damage to three-story home in Richmond in excess of $125,000, chief estimates

A fire that damaged a three-story home in Richmond Sunday night resulted in two occupants with minor burn injuries, Richmond Township Fire Protection District Chief Henry Gruba said Monday.

The Richmond Township Fire Protection District responded at 8:40 p.m. Sunday to 5705 Broadway where crews found a three-story home with fire showing out of the back of the building from the second floor, Gruba said. The fire was rapidly moving to the third floor.

Some people still were in the home when fire crews arrived, and firefighters were able to find them and get them out safely, Gruba said. Two occupants had minor burn injuries, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

The fire was extinguished in 20 to 25 minutes and crews encountered no hiccups, Gruba said, citing the good water supply because of the fire’s location west of the downtown where there are fire hydrants and the “excellent support” from the Wonder Lake, Hebron, Spring Grove, McHenry Township;and Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, fire departments.

Crews remained on the scene until about 1 a.m. to assist the residents, wait for the company that boards up the structure and conduct the investigation, Gruba said.

The exact damage still is being determined, but Gruba estimated it exceeds $125,000. Fire damage occurred on the interior and exterior of the second and third stories and water damage occurred at all levels.

The cause of the fire also is under investigation, Gruba said.
