Community Foundation for McHenry County now accepting scholarship applications

Crystal Lake-based nonprofit offers 11 scholarships established ‘to memorialize a loved one, honor an alma mater or to celebrate (the donor’s) passion’

The Community Foundation for McHenry County is located at 33 E. Woodstock St. in Crystal Lake.

Applications now are open for the 11 scholarships offered by the Community Foundation for McHenry County.

A simple online quiz will help high school seniors and college students determine which of the scholarships they qualify for. The quiz can be found at TheCFMC.org.

“Many generous donors have chosen to establish scholarship funds at The Foundation to memorialize a loved one, honor an alma mater or to celebrate their passion,” Executive Director Deborah Thielen said in a news release. “We encourage students to seek out scholarship opportunities to help offset the cost of higher education.”

Among the scholarships offered, for example, is the Erling K. Nor Education Scholarship, which was established to honor the memory of Erling K. Nor and the contributions he made to the community.

This scholarship, worth $5,000 a year, is restricted to graduating high school seniors from Alden-Hebron School District 19, who “share similar qualities of hard work and community involvement with the late E.K. Nor.” The scholarship is open to all majors and is to be used in pursuit of a four-year degree.

Another scholarship seeks to assist athletes at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock that meet certain academic requirements and are in need of financial support.

Students have until midnight April 14 to submit an application. Scholarships will be awarded in May.
